College Rugby Competition Rages in Cleveland

Young rugby talent will be on display this weekend, with the Cleveland rugby faithful playing host to an array of collegiate talent.

Notre Dame College will play host to a number of men's and women's as they put on their Collegiate Challenge Cup The final count is eight teams for the men and four for the women. The competition in the men's division is very Ohio-heavy, with six of the eight reams calling the Buckeye State home. Aside from the hosts, the University of Dayton, University of Cincinnati, Miami, Ohio University and Bowling Green State University are bringing some Ohio flare to the proceedings. Rounding out the men's division are Saint Bonaventure and the University of Buffalo.

The women's bracket, the women from Ohio State University are the only other Ohio representatives aside from the ladies from Notre Dame College. Davenport and the University of Michigan will also be represented in the weekend's competition.

It would be tough to pick the front-runners in each division and try to pick out a winner, but each team has a chance to have some success on Saturday. Clearly, the hosts seemingly have the most chance to win the whole thing. They have had large amounts of success in the field of sevens field and been consistent in collecting the wins over most of their opponents. Bowling Green State University has probably the next best chance of taking the tournament. While they have had similar success as Notre Dame College, the Falcons have been doing it for longer. On top of that, BGSU is coming off of a less-than-stellar performance last weekend, so they will be looking to rebound in a big way this weekend in South Euclid. Cincinnati and Dayton are clubs on the rise who have had success on the 15s circuit. It will be interesting to see how that success transfers onto the sevens scene.
Schedule for the NDC Collegiate Challenge Cup 2015

The Cleveland Rugby Club will host the men's contingency of Ohio State University's rugby family in their second straight match against an in-state collegiate side. The men's club had a strong but far-from-convincing performance against Ohio University last weekend. They put up over one hundred points on their competition, but they also let up almost 40 points and had some chinks in their armor exposed. Ohio State should be a tougher test on Saturday, so the Cleveland Rugby Club will have to pick up their performance if they intend to put together a win and keep the positive momentum going  as their playoff matches against men's league competition approaches.

The Notre Dame College tournament will kick off at 10:00am at the school's campus, 4545 College Drive Rd. South Euclid Ohio 44121; and the Cleveland Rugby Club kicks off their competition at 1:00pm on the corner of Ox Lane and River Road in the North Chagrin Reservation of the Cleveland Metroparks.
