Ninth Prom on the Pitch Adds Men's and High School Competitions

The Akron Women’s Rugby Team is putting on their ninth annual Prom on the Pitch on Saturday, May 16. The event is a fundraiser for the Battered Women’s Shelter of Summit and Medina Counties and generally brings together a number of women’s teams and their fans in an effort to gather donations for the shelter.

This year’s competition will be a little different. This year, there will be four women’s teams playing a round-robin competition, along with an appearance from the Akron Men’s Rugby Team.

Ahead of the men and women’s competitions, there will be the inaugural Junior Prom on the Pitch. That match will take place on Friday, May 15, and will feature the Highland and Brunswick high school girls’ teams.

Both days will have a charitable arm to them. On Friday, the high school teams will be collecting gently used formal dresses for the Andrea Rose Teodosio Foundation, which brings in dresses, shoes and accessories so that girls in need can attend formal events in style. The men and women will be collecting items for the shelter. Items they will be taking include:

·        boxed food
·        cleaning and paper products
·        trash bags
·        powdered laundry detergent
·        household items - coffee makers, silverware, plates, toasters, microwaves, etc.)
·        maternity clothes
·        linens
·        blankets and comforters
·        towels
·        suitcases
·        backpacks
·        over-the-counter medication for children and adults
·        new baby items - bottles, diapers, wipes, etc.

More information on donations can be found on the shelter’s Website.

Kick-off for the high school match is at 6:00pm on Friday. Sassy Dog will be on-site hosting concessions. The adults’ matches kick off at 11:00am on Saturday and end at 3:00pm. The Stone Pelican Food Truck will be on site, donating a portion of sales to the shelter.

All matches will take place at the Akron Rugby Pitch, located at 1763 Wadsworth Road, Copley, OH. Directions can be found on the Akron Rugby Website

Families are welcome and encouraged to attend. Admission and parking are free. Seating is limited so spectators are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets. All are welcome to attend the social following the last match.
