OSU and BGSU Battle Tough in Big Ten Sevens Tournament

Over the weekend, Big Ten Rugby held a sevens tournament that pitted teams from all over the Midwest against one another. Ohio was represented by three teams – two from Ohio State University and one from Bowling Green State University. While Indiana ended up taking the tournament, the Ohio sides put up solid performances throughout the competition.

In the opening rounds of pool play, the Ohio-based clubs started out slowly, with all three sides suffering early losses to Purdue and Indiana. The first side from Ohio State knocked off Bowling Green by a slim two-point margin in pool play as well. The second side put down Northern Michigan University 33-19 in pool play as well.

The Cup Quarterfinal didn't go much better for the two Ohio State teams. Their second team got blanked by Indiana and their primary team went down by two points to Purdue. Fortunately, they rebounded in the
Plate Semifinals. The first OSU side shut out the University of Michigan and put up 24 points in the process. Not to be outdone, the second team put up 31 points on Central Michigan, who managed to put up 12 points of their own. In an effort to minimize the prospect of incurring further injuries, the Ohio State teams opted not to play each other in the Plate Final.

Meanwhile, in the Bowl Semifinal Bowling Green redeemed themselves after a slow start during the run of pool play. They shut out Western Michigan University and racked up 43 points in the process. Unfortunately, Iowa proved to be too much for them and pulled away from them, 26-19, in the Bowl Final.

While this weekend's competition didn't end very favorably for Ohio State and Bowling Green State University, it was a good warm-up for the Notre Dame College 7s tournament April 11 and a strong start to the Spring and Summer season.
