Canton Goes Into the Weekend with 3-1 Record

The Canton Maddogs will host the Westmoreland Highlanders this weekend at Weis Park. Coming off of last week's big win, the Maddogs will come in with a lot of momentum, but with areas to improve upon as well.

In last weekend's match, the Maddogs hosted Greensburg in a Midwest Division IV league match and came out the victors by a score of 35-14.

The try scorers for for Canton were Chris Wright, Aaron Traugh, Ian Kell, John McMullan and Mike Regimbal. Gabe Mullane added a set of successful conversion attempts and a single penalty kick to his team's tally. McMullan also put over a drop goal amid traffic during open play. Despite the high score on the part of the Maddogs, that wasn't the reason the team won.

"Defense was the key today," said Canton's Head Coach Dan Sturtz. "Our defensive pressure kept Greensburg from getting any momentum most of the match. We were so aggressive defensively that we gave up some penalties, but we were able to overcome that adversity."

That defensive efficiency set the stage for the team's offense, which flowed well and allowed players to spread the ball around the pitch. Accorsing to Sturtz, his team played tough and physical - Canton-style rugby. Ahead of the clash with the Highlanders, Sturtz plans to refine his team's defensive pressure in order to cut down on the penalties.
