Canton Hopes to Close Out '15 with Win

This weekend the Canton Maddogs set to close out the winter portion of the season against the Cleveland Crusaders, the team that put the first blemish on the season. Getting a win this weekend would be a great way to end the 2015 section of the season, not to mention the best way to rebound from the team's most recent loss against the Maulers.

Last weekend, the Maddogs went to Greensburg, Pa. for another league match. Leading up to the weekend's competition, the Maddogs' goal of getting back to playoffs hadn't been going well; and once the away match was over it got worse.

"We lacked discipline early on and dug ourselves a hole that was too difficult to overcome," said Gabe Mullane, captain for the Maddogs. "I'll give it to the boys. It was very physical on both sides of the ball. We were just outclassed by Greensburg. We realize that we still have room for improvement."

When the match against the Maulers was finisdhed, Canton had lost the match by a score of 22-10.  Joe Doyle scored the lone try for Canton, while Gabe Mullane kicked the conversion and a single penalty.

"We were aggressive throughout the entire match, but mental breakdowns and penalties worked against us," said Head Coach Dan Sturtz. "We led 10-5 at halftime, but wee fell apart in the second half. We played a lot of defense and couldn't seem to get the ball rolling on offense. We will learn form our mistakes and prepare for our final match this fall against Cleveland on Saturday."

The Maddogs will take the lessons from the match against the Maulers to Cleveland tomorrow. The confrontation is more than just a way to bounce back from a disappointing result and get payback on the first team to beat them this year. As it stands now, the Maddogs sit squarely in third place and the Crusaders are right above them. Righting the ship and getting the win could allow Canton to take second and move into the winter intermission with some much-needed momentum.

The match against the Crusaders kicks off at 11:30am.
