Registration Open for Fifth Annual Youngstown Tournament

For the past four years, the Youngstown rugby community has put on a tournament to honor a local hero. On March 26, the fifth installment of the Michael T. Hartzell Rugby Classic will take place.

This year's tournament will play host to open divisions for men's and women's teams from the area. This will be in addition to the usual double-elimination, 15s tournament. To accommodate all this rugby, the tournaments will be running on three separate fields throughout the day.

Matches will run two 20-minute halves in order to keep the day moving, and teams will be able to make rolling substitutions. Teams that enter the 15s competition will be guaranteed three games, so teams eliminated after two matches will receive consultation matches.

Aside from supporting the scholarship fund, this event is set to provide an opportunity for teams from all divisions to get a chance to tune up before their respective spring seasons start back up. Whether teams are preparing for playoffs or traveling for some springtime season fun, teams will be able to test their club against all kinds of competition.

This year's event is being put on in conjunction with the Mill Creek Metroparks and will be held at Wick Recreation Area.

Food and beverage will be provided for teams once they are eliminated from the tournament, and all participants are welcome to the post-tournament social.

The entry fee for this year's competition is $250.00 a team. Clubs that participated in the Thomas “Chris” Smythe Memorial 10s tournament will get $50 deducted from their entry fee.

Teams should reserve their spots by March 11, 2016. Checks can be made out to Youngstown Steel Valley Rugby Club and addressed to Youngstown Steel Valley Rugby Club at 1959 Twin Oaks Drive Girard, Ohio 44420. PayPal payment options will also available on the team's Web site soon.

Teams or individuals with questions or concerns can contact Bill Burton.
