Collegiate Teams Converge to Compete for Cleveland Cup

Northeast Ohio is a densely populated rugby area. It has an especially high concentration of college teams. With that being the case, it was just a matter of time before a competition was created to put them all against one another. The Cleveland Cup is that competition.

With the help of the Great Lakes Rugby Football Conference, six of the area's toughest teams will convene and compete for the trophy in a two-day competition. Case Western, fresh off a run at the NSCRO Midwest Championship in the fall, will start off the day in a match against up-and-coming Cleveland State. John Carroll has been a staple on the scene, but has been very much operating under the radar recently. Perhaps the newest team on the scene, the University of Akron, will begin the weekend against JCU. The competition's most notable sides, Baldwin-Wallace and Notre Dame College, will await the winners of the first two matches to close out the first day of competition. As far as the NSCRO is concerned, BW is the highest ranked team in this tournament - at no. 13 - and the NDC cache speaks for itself.Suffice to say, these two are the teams to beat to earn the Cup.

On Saturday, April 1, the opening rounds of the competition will take place on the campus of Case Western. The following day, the teams travel to to Barea, OH, to the campus of Baldwin-Wallace to decide the champions. Before matches begin, the question on everyone's minds will be: Who will take the inaugural Cleveland Cup? After the close of business Sunday, it will be: Who's got the Cup?

Below is a match schedule for the two days of play:
